The Pigeon Point section of the Trinity River is the perfect whitewater adventure for families and beginning rafters. This section features gorgeous side creeks, big sandy beaches and some exciting Class III rapids, with opportunities for both salmon and steelhead fishing. There are rafting trips available for any schedule, from fun and splashy ½ day adventures, to three-day journeys, which will allow paddlers to fully take in all the canyon has to offer. Snowmelt from the Trinity Alps, along with a steady release of water out of Lewiston Lake, provides good levels for rafting all summer long.
Rafters can expect to see an array of wildlife including eagles, deer, hawks, osprey, herons, and kingfishers, along with otter, mink and even bears.
The Trinity has a long history of gold mining that rafters can learn about during their trip through the remnants the miners have left behind. In 1851, 10,000 miners worked in the area. Later, hydraulic mining, dredging, and eventually damming operations irrevocably changed the Trinity. Today, it is known as one of the most beautiful stretches in California and is protected by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
For the more advanced rafter, some of the companies listed above offer runs on the Burnt Ranch Gorge and the South Fork of the Trinity at Big Slide. These are both Class V adventures and require that paddlers are in good physical condition and can swim. These runs are a once in a lifetime experience through wild and rugged canyons, with some of the best summer-time Class V that California has to offer.
