Arcata, population of 16,381, is located just off Hwy 101 near the junction with Hwy 299, approximately 110 miles south of the Oregon border and 225 miles north of San Francisco in the heart of the Redwood country. The mild climate and beautiful scenery attracts thousands of visitors each year. On the east side of town is Redwood Park and the Arcata Community Forest, a living museum of 600 acres of second growth redwoods and nearly 10 miles of trails. The forest and beaches provide a wealth of outdoor activities.
Arcata is home of Humboldt State University, one of the oldest colleges in the California State University system founded in 1913. Humboldt State can be seen against the backdrop of the community forest on the east side of Highway 101.
