 Manitou Springs, named for the abundant naturally carbonated springs found in the area, is located just 4 miles west of Colorado Springs. Long before white settlers arrived, Native Americans such as the Ute, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, and Kiowa considered the springs sacred and a neutral place where all could heal their ailments without worry of defending themselves.
As the 19th century arrived, the U.S. purchased the land from the French and soon discovered this wonderful gem at the base of Pikes Peak. The town of Manitou Springs came to be in the 1870's.
This cozy town is at the base of Pikes Peak and today offers many attractions nearby such as Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak Railway and Cave of the Winds. Recreational activities such as hiking and biking abound near Manitou Springs. Whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River is only 1 hour away. Of course, spectacular scenery can be found everywhere.
