Lodore Canyon Rafting Trip Description Lodore Canyon, often called the Gates of Lodore begins in Northwestern Colorado downstream of Flaming Gorge Dam. It ends in Northeastern Utah near Dinosaur National Monument. This section of the Green River runs steadily year round due to the regulated flows from the dam but is highest in May and June because of snowmelt.
Lodore Canyon was first navigated by John Wesley Powell in 1869. His party named rapids such as Disaster Falls, Hell's Half Mile, and Triplet. The Lodore Canyon he saw was wild, untamed, and undocumented. A Lodore Canyon rafting trip exhibits many of the characteristics John Wesley Powell observed. However, today's highly capable rafting outfitters make the trip quite luxurious.
