This reach of the South Platte can be rafted and is much more pleasant than would be expected for an urban river from Chatfield to Union. Wildlife viewing is good for an urban area. The reviewer has not boated below Union except at Confluence Park. At the Excel Energy Generating Plant at Zuni there is a low-head dam which presents serious risk and must be portaged or the end of the trip. there is a small dock on river left just above the dam. Look for the tall smokestack and power plant on river right. below Confluence Park are some interesting-looking Class II boat chutes and whitewater features. Further downstream is the Metro Wastewater discharge which is foul. Water quality degrades as one floats downstream from Chatfield and at low water times can be disgusting (less fresh water to dilute wastewater plant effleunt).
