Monarch is a hamlet that sits six miles from Monarch Ski and Snowboard Area. The resorts lodge sits in the town of Monarch and not at the base of the ski hill. Monarch used to be named Garfield for James Garfield, the 20th president of the U.S., but the name was changed in the 1990's because of the ski resort.
