 Pagosa Springs is a small town of approximately 1,400 people sitting on the San Juan River. Pagosa is a Ute word for boiling water which can be found coming up out of the ground all around Pagosa Springs. Pagosa Springs is 25 miles from Wolf Creek Ski Area, which gets some of the most snow in the state.
Certainly, the largest attraction is Wolf Creek Ski area which has 1425 vertical feet of drop and is famous for its snowcat tours. After a long day in the mountains, winter or summer, be sure to go to The Springs where hot springs pools overlook the San Juan River. Pagosa Springs celebrates Winterfest the second weekend of February, there are ski races, an ice sculpture contest, and other family activities. In the end of September to celebrate the changing of the leaves, Pagosa Springs hosts ColorFest where there is a balloon rally a mountain bike race, and outdoor music.
In the summer, people flock to Pagosa Springs because of its surrounding beauty. Summer activities include sightseeing, hiking (be sure to look for the many waterfalls in the area), camping, biking, fishing, and kayaking on the Piedra. Winter activities include skiing, telemark skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, and snoeshoeing.
