Excellent remote wilderness float trip. Floated by a grizzly on
bank and observed tracks of numerous species such as black
bear, wolf, moose, etc. on sandy banks. Flight into Schaffer
meadow is fun and scenic. Upper section is VERY busy class III
+. Lots of obstacles, strainers, and tricky decisions due to
islands. Established campsites are difficult to locate due to
dense forest along river. Foot bridge on topo map didn't exist
during '05. Lots of springs and waterfalls. Good cut throat
fishing in surrounding lakes. River increases in volume
dramatically with every mile. Middle to lower sections are
straight forward class III with the exception of Spruce Rapid IV...
we navigated with little effort, but higher flows could prove to
create more challenge?? We saw one other party of people in
five days. Definately suggest a layover day or two... why not,
you've done all this work to get the gear in here. |
