I've done the real Grand Canyon float trip 3 times and still prefer Oregon's Owyhee, Rome to Birch Cr/Leslie. HOT SPRINGS are great! Scenery like Brice Natl Park! Whitewater enjoyable, reasonably challenging for the intermediate+ boater, adv. at low/hi levels. (I have run at levels from 190 to 14,000 cfs.)
Wildlife like eagles, bighorn sheep, many birds. Good for bass fishing, too. Wonderful for photographers, with all the colors and formations. Rockhound's paradise with giant (500-pound) agates, zeolites, crystals, etc. Good hiking (no real trails) to awesome overlooks, petroglyphs (Native rock carvings), old pioneer sites. Colorful wildflowers/wild thyme bushes.
This is wild country with little access, so use caution. Several rapids are very difficult at some water levels. Delicate High Desert ecology -- follow no trace camping. Especially Do NOT tear limbs from trees (they aren't dead, just dormant). For more info, contact me at OregonRiverBum@aol.com. |
