Rafting through Cataract Canyon is an incredible way to experience Canyonlands National Park. You'll begin your Cataract Canyon rafting trip with several relaxing days floating on the Colorado River through spectacular red walled canyons. Side hikes are abundant and a great way to see old native American ruins.
At the confluence of the Colorado and the Green River the river increases in size and heads toward the rapids of Cataract Canyon. A few miles below the confluence the white water part of your Cataract Canyon rafting trip begins and continues for the next 12 miles.
You will encounter nearly 30 class III and IV rapids. With many new rapids surfacing after years of being buried below Lake Powell. Several years of drought in the American west has caused Lake Powell to recede by more than 50 miles from it's high point in the mid 1980's.
In previous decades, your Cataract Canyon rafting trip would end with a 30 mile tow across Lake Powell to Hite Marina. Now you can float all the way to the take out on river current. Rafting Cataract Canyon in this unique time, allows you to see the canyon undergoing a natural reclamation.
No one is sure how long the lake's decline will last so raft on Cataract Canyon while you can see it all. Contact the outfitters shown below to book your Cataract Canyon rafting trip. |

I had the great joy of truly exploring Canyonlands National Park in 2005. Cataract Canyon -- Grand Canyon style rapids without the price tag or time commitment or waiting list! After the Colorado River, a flight took us to Needles to jeep another three days. Had a super view of the Confluence where lifejackets were donned for the 28 fresco rapids. The hikes, the stories of human history and the explanations of geology were fascinating. Doing this combined itinerary was a magnificent choice for us. Look into it too ~ |

I had a much needed reprieve from society in July of 2005. Floating through Cataract Canyon was one of the highlights of my life. Our guides were great and the scenery combined with whitewater rapids made for a great rafting trip. Floating through 40 feet of old silt canyons and seeing nature recover from the damage Lake Powell has done was very cool too. A truly magical trip. |

My husband and I did a rafting trip on Cataract Canyon in 2004 late in the summer. It was hot but beautiful. The red canyon walls were absolutely spectacular. Anytime you got hot you could jump in the river. We went on several side hikes and saw some indian ruins. I can't imagine trying to farm and live in such a place. Vacationing there was great. I'd recommend that anyone who has 4 or 5 days does this trip. |
