Lodore Canyon Rafting Trip Description Lodore Canyon, often called the Gates of Lodore begins in Northwestern Colorado downstream of Flaming Gorge Dam. It ends in Northeastern Utah near Dinosaur National Monument. This section of the Green River runs steadily year round due to the regulated flows from the dam but is highest in May and June because of snowmelt.
Lodore Canyon was first navigated by John Wesley Powell in 1869. His party named rapids such as Disaster Falls, Hell's Half Mile, and Triplet. The Lodore Canyon he saw was wild, untamed, and undocumented. A Lodore Canyon rafting trip exhibits many of the characteristics John Wesley Powell observed. However, today's highly capable rafting outfitters make the trip quite luxurious.

This is a classic group float trip with great camp sites and hiking along the way. The rapids are just challenging enough to keep you on your toes, but not frightning. There are incredible views of very diverse geoligy. I don't know how you could go wrong, unless the water was just too low.

Lodore Canyon is a beautiful place in the very remote part of Northwestern Colorado. My rafting trip was in an extreme drought year, 2002. The weather was great but the river was low. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars. We had some nice side hikes and it was cool to check out Dinosaur National Monument after the rafting trip. |
