The Middle Fork of the Salmon is considered one of the most outstanding whitewater rafting trips in the western U.S. The river begins its journey in the Sawtooth Mountains between Stanley and Sun Valley Idaho and finishes at the Confluence of the Main Salmon River. At the beginning of the trip, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is a small mountain stream in a lush green forest. Over the next 100 miles it transitions to a large river with steep and deep canyon walls. The Middle Fork is protected as a Wild & Scenic River and is included in Patricia Shultz’s famous 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.

Over the course of your trip, you’ll have the opportunity to experience rejuvenating hot springs almost every day, combined with world-class rapids and stunning scenery. It passes through three National Forests, the Challis, Payette and Salmon. One of the most dramatic sections is the last 20 miles when the river tumbles through the famous Impassable Canyon, which features nearly vertical batholith granite walls, towering thousands of feet over the riverbed.

The Middle Fork ends at the confluence with the Main Salmon, which then travels west and eventually joins up with the Snake River.

Permits are always required to float the Middle Fork of the Salmon, and during the most popular rafting months, there is a lottery system to distribute permits. From September 4 – May 27, groups can float the Middle Fork whenever they would like. For more information on obtaining an off-season permit call the Salmon-Challis Forest Service HQ at 208.879.4101.
