The Rogue River flows from high in the Cascade Mountains of Southern Oregon and continues to the Pacific Ocean. On a Rogue River rafting trip you can experience scenic floats as well as heart pounding excitement. The Wild and Scenic section of Rogue River in Southern Oregon is world-renowned for its unparalleled beauty and wildlife. This section was one of the eight original areas protected by the Federal Act in 1968 to save wilderness lands near rivers from land development and mining. Many of the scenes from the movie, “The River Wild” were shot on this beautiful river.
Wildlife is abundant and boaters will see black bears, deer, bird, river otter and many other northern creatures. Although powered river vessels abound on the lower section of the river, the Rogue remains pristine and enjoyable, although there is always competition at the height of the season for the best campsites.
Thanks to federal regulation, generations will enjoy the challenging Rainy Falls and the many technical Class III and IV rapids scattered throughout this sacred place. Permits are not easy to come by, a blessing in disguise that keeps this river free of too much traffic and use. Permits are given out in a lottery during the first six weeks of every year, and if you can plan ahead, this is a good first option. If you have a flexible schedule and are willing to change your plans quickly, released permits are posted on the BLM website and can be reserved by calling the office. Last minute releases can often times only be claimed in person and are announced at 3 p.m. every afternoon.
